But one turbine, albeit a very large one, isn’t nearly enough to keep the lights, air conditioners and numerous shop tools humming along every day, all day. So Jay decided to augment the Delta II with a grid-tied General Electric solar power system.

Solar and wind systems compliment one another nicely. When there’s no sunlight to be captured but the wind is blowing, the turbine will make power. When there’s sunlight but no wind, the solar panels pump out the juice. And when those powerful Santa Ana winds of Southern California kick up on a sunny day, both can really crank out the kilowatts. Jay has found that he can make his own electricity in just about any weather. On one recent day, we learned the last time we were at the garage, Jay had made more power than he consumed—enough to spin his electric meter backwards. But to produce such a significant portion of the energy he uses from sunlight, Jay had to go big. And that’s exactly what he did, thanks to some guidance from GE.

The roof of the garage is covered with 270 solar panels. Each one is a 200-watt GE module—one of the most powerful designs on the market. The whole system produces 54 kilowatts of DC power. That’s enough to serve a good chunk of the energy needs (at least while the sun is shining) of eight to ten average homes. GE says that over the lifetime of the system (about 25 years) Jay will offset close to 3 million pounds of CO2, which, according to GE, would be equivalent to taking 200 cars off the road. GE worked with Premier Power to design and install the system. Like many roof-mounted systems, Jay’s panels are attached to nonpenetrating racks. The panels essentially float on the roof and are less susceptible to high-wind loads than are other mounting systems. A Xantrex inverter converts the DC energy from the solar panels to normal household AC.

One of the coolest features about the system is the Fat Spaniel Technologies Web monitor. Basically, Jay logs onto the company’s Web site, where he tracks just how much energy is being used and how much is being made—daily, weekly or monthly. Everyone at the Green Garage can see, right there on a computer screen, the energy those solar modules are producing. Check back soon for a long-term report on the system.

For Jay Leno, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing was always just out of reach. That changed recently when he bought, and slowly restored, a 1955 300SL. Though its paint job isn't new, this sturdy Gullwing is finally back on the road.

Some are restorations that folks may have barely started. Others are vehicles they’ve labored over, but never quite finished. Then there are the cars that people have owned for 40 years, and now they ask me if I’d like to buy them so they end up in a good home.

That’s how I came to own a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. It was an old race car that its owners put in a storage container out in the California desert in the late 1970s. And the Mercedes just sat there for decades. I’m only the third owner. And that makes it special.

The 300SL was ahead of its time, with a tubular space frame, fully independent suspension, a fuel-injected SOHC Six, those cool gullwing doors and a lot of racing history. John Fitch won the GT Class in the 1955 Mille Miglia, and finished fifth overall in what was basically a stock 300SL. But for me, it was always a car that was just out of reach. When I was in college in 1969, working for a Mercedes-Benz dealer, we took one in trade. We gave the guy $5500 for it, which seemed like a lot of money back then. Within 10 days, we’d sold it for $7200. We thought we’d pulled off quite a con job ... we got 7200 bucks for that thing.

We’re restoring the mechanicals and the instruments on my Gullwing, but we’ll leave the worn interior and exterior alone. I like not having to worry about a freshly sprayed, pristine paint job. It’s very liberating if a screwdriver falls on the fender and makes a mark. You don’t go, “Aaarrrggghhh! The first chip!”

At some point, we will restore it completely. But there’s something charming about having a car that’s used for its original purpose—driving. I’ll just tool around in this coupe for a while, and when enough purists get angry at me, we’ll restore it. But right now, I can take it to Bob’s Big Boy and if somebody wants to lean on it, I won’t get upset. I don’t want to be one of those guys who says “Hey! Hey! Heyyy!”

The 3.0-liter inline Six in Jay’s 300 SL now runs smoothly thanks to the engine dyno.
So far, we’ve redone the transmission, the brakes and the motor. We broke in the engine correctly—on the dynamometer. There’s a diaphragm in the Bosch fuel-injection system that was originally made of some kind of lambskin. The original one was faulty, and the engine was running way too lean over the 3500 to 4000 rpm range. But we have a new one in now, and it’s running much better. If we had installed the engine in the car without the dyno test, we would have probably melted a piston, and the engine would have been destroyed. But luckily, we caught the problem.

These 3-liter Sixes were supposed to develop 220 to 240 hp. We cleaned it up internally, did a little work to it, and we’re seeing around 180 hp. I was disappointed, but I talked to a few Mercedes guys, and they said that was about right. It’s like the Jaguar XKE—Jag claimed 265 hp, but it was probably more like 210 hp. Back then, everybody lied about horsepower.

This Gullwing is no trailer queen—it’s built to drive hard.
The 300SL has beautiful finned brake drums, but a chunk of one drum was missing. We could have made a new one with our CNC machine, but instead we called the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, which has parts for just about every car the company made. They’re not inexpensive, but try to find one anywhere else. It’s brand-new, and it’s made by Mercedes-Benz. Every Gullwing part is available from the Classic Center.

Honda used to do that. When Soichiro Honda, the company’s founder, was alive, he vowed that every part for every Honda motorcycle would always be available. But once he died, they brought in the accountants who said it wasn’t viable to keep Honda 50 leg shields in stock. Yet Mercedes-Benz has always produced those parts, and that makes people bond with the brand.

They built just 1402 300SL Gullwing coupes, but it was enough to support the spare-parts market. If you write a book on the Gullwing, you’ll always sell at least 1400 of them. If you write a book on, say, the Jackson car, made in Michigan until 1923, you’ll sell five. There might be five Jacksons left out there.

My vintage 300SL Gullwing will be finished at about the same time the new SLS AMG Gullwing hits the road. And the old ones still cost more than those brand-new ones. I think that’s funny, but I do like to see the heritage carried on. The Gullwing works because there’s a bit of theater involved. The car requires some effort: You can’t just get in and drive it. There are certain things you have to know about, whether it’s as simple as the flip-down steering wheel or the heater controls. You sort of pilot these cars; you don’t necessarily drive them. You have to understand the handling limitations of those swing axles too—in high-speed corners they can be a handful. Consequently, you tend to drive a bit more carefully.

I’m not one of those people who have to have the ultimate 300SL with the knockoff Rudge wheels either. That’s just extra cake frosting. I think the regular hubcaps and steel wheels look a little nicer. The knockoffs can loosen and come off, and I don’t want to drill them and put safety wire on them. With lug nuts, I know what I’m doing. It’s like women who wear those high heels. “Yes, but they’re really attractive,” they’ll say. And I think to myself, “But they’re uncomfortable!”

The Gullwing isn’t our only Mercedes project. I bought a 6.3-liter 600 sedan from the 1960s with 324,000 miles on it—my favorite Mercedes from a styling and performance point of view. I thought, why don’t we install the modern 6.3-liter V8? So we’re putting in a new AMG 563-hp V8, like the one in the SLS, with a seven-speed transmission. We’ll turn it into the ultimate 6.3 Mercedes-Benz. Stay tuned.

A forgotten treasure just waiting for someone — you — to rediscover. At least that's the dream. But it doesn't happen very often.

I believe if you just go out looking for old cars, not for any particular model, you're more likely to find a car you want. I think all the Duesenbergs have been discovered; all the Cobras are present and accounted for, and the locations of all the C-Type Jags and the D-Type Jags are pretty much known. But there still are a lot of other exciting cars out there.

If you enjoy doing the legwork — the detective work — you just might find something neat. It's no different from going antiquing with your wife on a Saturday afternoon. It's just that you're hunting for cool cars instead of creaky old furniture and another collectible Elvis plate.

You never know where you'll stumble on an old vehicle. Take my 1941 American LaFrance firetruck. State-of-the-art for its day, it was bought new by Warner Bros. as their studio-lot truck. In the early '50s, Warner Bros. donated it to the City of Burbank, which kept it around for decades. One day the Burbank fire chief called me and said, "Hey, we've got this old firetruck. Do you want it?" Naturally, I said, "Yeah, sure." It only had 11,000 miles on it! It had never even been plated. So I became the first registered owner and got a fairly rare V12 collector firetruck — as a gift — because it wasn't worth anything to the owners.

The trick is, you can't be a snob. You've got to be open to the weird stuff that has an interesting story.

And people love sending me letters about weird stuff. Lots of times people think these cars are really valuable. But usually the letter goes something like: "I have a very rare Emilio Pucci edition 1976 Ford Granada — one of the few with the full wire-wheel hubcaps and white landau roof." But every now and then, there's something that's a little bit more interesting.

A few years back I received a letter from a woman in her 90s; she'd gotten married in a 1951 Hornet. In fact, it was the only car she and her husband had ever owned. After he died in 1996, the Hornet was parked in her garage. I went to look at it. Physically, it was fine. Mechanically, it was worn out. It had gone more than 260,000 miles. But it was all there. Every receipt was in the glove compartment. So I bought the Hornet. But really, I was buying the story more than I bought the actual car.

Don't be disappointed if what you find isn't some rare collector piece. Let's say you come across a '56 Chevy or a '55 Ford two-door with a three-on-the-tree and a 292-cu.-in. V8. These cars are fun to drive. They give you an experience that can't be duplicated with today's cars. For stuff like this you can pay anywhere from $1200 to about $5000. With a little bit of elbow grease, you have a collector car that's a great weekend cruiser. And you never know, there may even be a little history behind it.

Any car can be a collector car, if you collect it. People always say, "Buy the best car you can afford." That's nice ... if you're rich. You don't have to buy a spotless, multiple-concours-winning example to have some fun in this hobby. Just buy a driver. Or buy a wreck. A friend of mine has a Bugatti. It's completely rotted out. You couldn't possibly restore it. But he bought it, and now he's in the Bugatti Club. His car is literally a burned-out hulk. It would take a gazillion dollars to restore it. But he can say he's got a Bugatti. He rescued it.

I never really understood why people buy Harlequin romance novels. You know the ones: A lady meets a man who seems to be an innocuous guy but later turns out to be a prince. They have titles like So-and-So's First Date, or They Met at the Market. Why does anybody read this stuff?

But that's exactly the kind of romantic relationship you can have with old cars. You see one; you pine for it; you dream about what it'll be like when it's fixed up. So searching for cars is like the plots in those Harlequin novels. The best advice I can give is to find the oldest garage or gas station in your town. Go talk to the owner. Ask him if he has customers who haven't been in for a long time. Do they have an interesting car? Maybe there's a '69 Bonneville or some other model like that just waiting to be discovered.

If you like old things, I recommend that you talk to old guys. Seek them out. They were all young guys once. And a lot of them don't have any family left; they just want to see the love of their life, the car they were always going to restore — but never got around to — go to a good home.

Price is always a consideration, so don't expect these guys to give away their pride and joy. They want a fair deal, but they certainly aren't looking to get rich either. For a lot of these guys, it's more about the car going to the right garage — yours. So ask around the local old folks' home and talk to old folks. "Hey, didja' ever have an old car?" They might say: "Oh yeah, the old people next door to us had an old car. Now what the hell was that?"

So you go to that house and maybe there's something cool in the garage, like a '49 Nash Airflyte. Maybe it's a Hudson Hornet buried under 45 years of barn dust. Maybe it's something equally interesting.

But you have to take the initiative. There are people who'd like you to have their car. You just have to find them.
