Jerry Seinfeld may have the finest collection of Porsches in the world, and it was he who convinced Jay to buy his first one. And what a starter! The Carrera GT is a dazzling supercar, engineered for the track, but designed for the road. It’s the fastest, most technically advanced street Porsche ever. This baby goes zero to 60 in just over three seconds, zero to 214 in under ten, and tops out somewhere around 205 mph.
The Carrera GT was unveiled in 2003 at the Geneva Auto Show, the first supercar Porsche put into production since the 959 in 1983.The 5.7-liter, 605 horsepower V-10 was originally designed for LeMans, but when Porsche pulled out of professional racing to concentrate on development of the Cayenne, it had to wait for the Carrera. Weighing in at around 452 pounds, the engine is mounted just behind the cockpit, to achieve extreme aero dynamism and superb handling with its low slung center of gravity.
Power is transferred to the rear wheels with a newly developed, traditional six-speed manual transmission. But the technical highlight of the Carrera lies in its Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch, which has a rotating mass approximately ten times lighter than your average clutch. And it’s good to go for at least 50,000 really hard miles. The massive brakes are also lightweight ceramic, a design unique to Porsche. Even the forged magnesium wheels are ultralight. With the ATR carbon fiber chassis, the Carrera weighs in at 3043 pounds wet, and cost about $150 per pound while in limited production until 2006.
While the car is refined, comfortable and safe, it’s a very rare occasion when you get to drive the Carrera GT the way it was designed to be driven. But Jay got that opportunity one day at Talladega Superspeedway, earning track records for Standing Lap, Standing Mile and Standing Kilometer, while taking the Carrera over 200 laps at 175 mph. Now that’s fast!
