Ask Jay: The Lowdown on Turbocharging, Volumetric Efficiency and More...

June 30, 2010 9:02 PM

Jay answers the questions you asked! In this first installment, Jay and Jim Hall talk about volumetric efficiency, the difference between supercharging and turbocharging, and car clubs. Plus, if you have a slow oil leak and no money, here's what to do.

Christopher Andrew Manley asks:
Dear Jay, volumetric efficiency is term that I read in Cycle World but I don't understand what it means.

Danny asks:
Hi, I have a 1939 Diamler Benz that has a slow oil leak.
I don't have the money to get it fixed.
My question is, will it hurt to drive the car till I can get it fixed?

sdmrtoad asks:
How is supercharging or turbocharging different than raising compression?
Why can you only raise compression so far with gasoline without detonation and other problems, but you can boost the crap out of it without the same trouble?

old_s13 asks:
We all know that factory service manuals are important. How do you acquire tech info (i.e.: torque ratings and assembly procedures) for old, rare cars?
