1964 Lincoln Model 53A Papal Limousine with custom coachwork by Lehmann-Peterson
| February 6, 2008
Pope John VI may not have been the biggest party animal in Rome, but he certainly had the ultimate limo. This 21 foot, four-door, eight-passenger Lincoln Continental Model 53A was equipped with a removable bubble top and a second windscreen that could be erected when the limousine was completely open (as in the picture). This one-of-a kind party vessel additionally included security running boards at each side, grab handles on the back deck, and a throne-like papal chair that could be raised and lowered depending on the circumstances. A customized state-of-the-art on-board, custom-fitted public address system with amplifiers and speakers was also installed.
The Pope used this car in October of 1965 on his visit to New York and then again in Bogata, Columbia in 1968. Following its time in South America, the car returned to the United States and was used occasionally in ticker-tape parades, including parades in Chicago and New York for Astronauts from the Apollo 8, 11, and 13 space missions. Today, the car remains in its original and unrestored condition.
