1963 ATS 2500 GT Scaglione Allemano Coupe
| February 10, 2008
In 1961, Enzo Ferrari fired six key employees over complaints of his wife's meddling. The six ex-Ferrari men, including Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini, immediately set out to build their own GT sports car. They created the ATS 2500GT, which debuted at the 1963 Geneva Show, and was initially a great success, praised for its rigid and advanced space frame chassis, its handling and high-speed performance. With a sleek body designed by Scaglione, a 220 hp aluminum overhead-cam 2.5-liter V8 mounted behind the cockpit and a 5-speed competition transaxle, the 2500GT was the first Italian mid-engine sports car. Weighing in at just 1800 lb., the 2500GT was capable of 150 mph. Unfortunately, the ATS never found proper investment capital, and the project collapsed after only a few cars were completed. This example, car #3, was the Paris show car, and was completed just as the factory closed. This car’s use was restricted to the show circuit, and today the car shows on 900 km. The car remains in its original condition, with original tires, interior, trim, and original exterior paint.
