1909 Thomas Flyer K6-70
| March 16, 2008
In 1909 the Thomas Flyer was a superstar amongst all other American cars. Just the year before, a relatively stock Thomas Flyer had been entered into “The Great Race,” a race that ran from New York to Paris. The race began in New York during the winter and proceeded to San Francisco, then onto Alaska, Siberia, and Paris via the Asian and European continents. The Thomas beat seven other well-known marques representing the best the world could offer. The race lasted 171 days and covered 13,300 miles.
Demand for Thomas cars increased after the heroic victory and sales literature claimed this car, the 1909 Thomas, was the world's most perfect car - powerful, complete and luxurious. Thomas offered four lines in 1909 and the K 6-70 was the largest. The engine is a 784 cubic inch, 6-cylinder, developing 70 horsepower with 5 and 1/2 inch bore and 5 and 1/2 inch stroke. The price in 1909 was $6,000 – a huge sum for the day.
