| March 18, 2008
This is a 1912 Rauch & Lang TC Brougham electric vehicle originally owned by Thomas Edison.
In 1912, electric cars provided many benefits over the gas-powered cars. Starting electric cars was easy, especially when compared with the rudimentary means of spinning a crank to start a gasoline engine. Furthermore, electric cars were quiet and did not produce fumes.
Manufactured in Cleveland, Rauch & Lang automobiles were among the best and most luxurious electric cars of the day. They were easy to drive and comfortable to ride. They were also quite expensive, and, for many reasons, purchased mostly by rich urban women.
As the years progressed, internal combustion engines became improved, and as gasoline became easier for motorist to acquire, electric cars were unable to complete.
