1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Bohman and Schwartz Town Cabriolet
| March 18, 2008
Located in Pasadena, Bohman & Schwartz was one of the greatest and most creative post-depression automotive coachbuilding houses in all the world.
This one-off, Art Deco inspired Duesenberg town car (chassis # SJ-553) - one of the most outrageous and beautiful ever developed - is one of nine original Duesenberg designs completed by B&S. This car was originally designed for Mae West, yet, she never accepted delivery. Instead, upon completion, the car was purchased by Ethel Mars, the sole heir to the Mars Candy Company. The car, which in ’35 had a price exceeding $20k, was seen as being so special, it was featured in a special article in that week's Time Magazine.
Mars kept the car for several years. It then subsequently passed through several owners until coming into the collection of Bill Harrah in March of '66. The car remained in Harrah’s amazing 1,300 car collection until his death. The car was treated to its first restoration while in the care of Harrah.
In 2007 this car was sold at auction for $4,400,000 including buyer's premium.
