1915 Mercer Raceabout Series 22-70
| April 11, 2008
1915 was the fifth year of Raceabout production. Over that time Mercer had compiled an enviable record of wins in the field of racing and endurance competition. The 22-70 series also marked the first use of the l-head engines in Mercer cars, replacing the popular T-head engine of the previous models. This Raceabout body style, like the more open cars that preceded it, was highly popular with the younger motoring generation – at least those few who could afford it. The cost when new: $2,750.
Keep in mind, the car had no top, no windows and no heater. In most parts of the country for a many months of the year, a car like this was practically undrivable.
The 22-70 Mercer Raceabouts had 289.2 cubic inch, 70 hp, 4-cylinder engines.
