1939 Bugatti Type 57C Voll & Ruhrbeck Roadster
| April 24, 2008
This beautiful Bugatti Type 57C has one-off coachwork by Voll and Ruhrbeck of German. It is the only Bugatti that received coachwork from the Berlin firm.
Although it was never registered to her, the car was first maintained and driven by the famous Norwegian Olympic ice skater Sonja Henie. This car has come to be known as the ‘Car with the Waterfall Grill’ due to the unusual, yet stunning, grill treatment.
This car’s engine and chassis was one of the very last sold before the start of World Way II. Being one of the later cars, it benefited from all the latest updates including an effective hydraulic braking system and the twin lobe Rootes-type compressor. When the war broke out, the car was hidden away for safekeeping, where it stayed secure until 1946.
The body and chassis were separated in the 1960s. The body was owned for more than 30 years by a German collector. And the chassis and drivetrain was owned for the same period by a Swiss Collector. The Patterson Collection, one of the preeminent private collections in the United States, purchased all the parts and painstakingly restored the car to its current condition. The car was recently exhibited at Pebble, Amelia and several other preeminent US concours events.
The Bugatti Type 57C cars have 3.3 liter, supercharged inline 8-cylinder engines capable of 160 bhp at 5000 rpm.
