1911 Simplex Model 50 4-Passenger Tourabout
| April 27, 2008
Simplex cars were manaufactured in New York between 1904 and 1917. In 1915, the firm was purchased by the Crane Motor Car Company. Prior to the merger, no more than a few hundred cars were manufactured. Very few survive today.
In 1911, Simplex chassis were fitted with bodies that were custom crafted by such well-known body builders as Quinby and Holbrook. This made each car unique. Competitively, the powerful Simplex engines brought considerable success to the marque, winning numerous stock car races and hill climbs, besides setting many track records.
This car with a custom body by Quinby has a 597.3 cubic inch, 4-cylinder engine capable of 50 horsepower. The price of this car when new was $5600.
