1967 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 Alloy NART Spider
| April 28, 2008
This car is the first and most important Ferrari NART spider. It is one of only two with aluminum coachwork, and one of only four in a series believed to have been built completely from inception as a NART spider, the last six being built upon steel berlinetta panels.
The North American Racing Team (also known as NART) was created by Luigi Chinetti to promote the Ferrari marque in America through success in Gran Turismo (endurance) motorsport. NART was created in 1958 when Chinetti received backing from wealthy racers George Arents and Jan de Vroom. Ferrari already had a close relationship with Chinetti due to his success in selling the maker's road cars in the important American markets, and thus NART received a continuous line of excellent Ferrari racers.
In its short racing career, this car placed second at Sebring in 1967. Later the car was tested and appeared on the cover of the December 1967 ‘Road & Track.’ In the accompanying article, R&T claimed the Ferrari NART Spider was “The most satisfying Sports Car in the World.”
At about the same time as the R&T issue came out, the car had a star appearance in the original ‘Thomas Crown Affair’ starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunawaye. McQueen liked the car so much, in fact that he even ordered his own, the sixth to be created in the series.
