1935 Duesenberg SJ Gurney Nutting Speedster
| May 1, 2008
One of greatest Duesenberg’s ever created is this car - the MAHARAJA DUESENBERG. Built on a 153.3-inch wheelbase, this is the only Duesenberg to receive custom coachwork from Gurney Nutting LTD of Croydon, England. Sometimes referred to as the last Duesenberg, this car has the highest numbered Model J chassis?
After the car was fitted with the body, it was presented at the London Motor Show where it received great acclaim. Following the show, it was shipped to New York and driven to the Auburn factory in Auburn, Indiana. Once the car was thoroughly checked out by the ACD engineers, it was driven it to the West Coast where it was shipped to India.
The car’s first owner was a 28-year-old Indian Prince, Maharajadhiraj Raj Rajeshwar Sawai Shree Yashwant Rad Holkar Bahadur of India. He had a square estate that was 100 miles on each side. When he would drive it the little red light on the fender would be illuminated and the people would lay prostrate at the side of the road as he passed. When his wife the Maharani would drive it, the green light would be on and they would politely stand by the side of the road and wave. The prayer rug on the floor of the car was rumored to be worth more than the car.
When the Maharaja no longer needed the car, it was carried from the Indian jungle in a sling between four elephants. Later, the car returned to New York in 1956 and was advertised FOR SALE in the New York Times for $6,000.
This car is more beautiful than any single photo can show.
