1932 Duesenberg Indianapolis Race Car
| May 6, 2008
This Duesenberg was first run in the 1931 Indianapolis 500, driven by Fred Frame. In that race, this car averaged 96.4 mph and finished in second. In the 1932 Indy 500, this car, now driven by Billy Winn, finished in 9th.
This Duesenberg design was typical if racing cars in the 1930s, with a channel frame and tubular cross members made of steel, covered by a body made of hand-formed aluminum. The car rides on semi-elliptic springs with a beam front axle and a live rear axle. Breaks are four-wheel hydraulic.
A Duesenberg straight eight, 150 cubic-inch, 175 hp engine, with double overhead camshafts provided the power. The engine was entirely Duesenberg with exception of a Bosch ignition and dual Winfield carburetors. New, this car cost around $12,500.
This car was once part of the Harrah Collection. In recent years, it has been on display at the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana.
