1959 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder
| May 6, 2008
For Ferrari enthusiasts the 1959 250 GT LWB California Spyder is perhaps the most beautiful car the company ever made. To the mechanically minded, the car is equally appreciated for its smooth and powerful Colombo 240 bhp, V-12 engine and an exceptional chassis.
By the mid-50s Pinin Farina was the undisputed master of Ferrari design. Many of his company’s earlier car designs led to this unbelievable car, offered here in long wheel base form. Sticking to the Pinin Farina design, the Cal Spyders were actually shaped and fabricated at the Renaissance craft shop of Sergio Scaglietti.
This car is the 28th of only 51 long wheel base California Spyders built. This particular car was ordered from the factory with special one-off amenities such as a ZF steering gearbox, a 90-liter fuel tank, and an Abarth exhaust system. Upon completion the car was delivered directly to its new owner in the United States.
This car was auctioned during last year’s the Pebble Beach Concours weekend. The selling price: $4,455,000 (no, not a typo).
