1967 Fiat 124 Sport Spider
| May 8, 2008
This is my favourite car, a dream fulfilled after years of searching. The 124 Spider is a brilliant machine in itself, and mine is one of the ultimate collectors' versions, as it is one of the small batch of pre-series cars made available to the very first customers in early '67. These cars have numerous details different to common production cars. Mine is doubly rare in that it is black, which was a very rare colour.
But this car is no garage queen, I use it pretty much daily (except if it rains heavily, then I take my '78 Fiat 127), and it's pretty darned reliable.
In fact, to me this car has the perfect balance as it is gorgeous (like a baby Ferrari 275 GTS), the mechanicals are brilliant (twin-cam inline four designed by Aurelio Lampredi, formerly of Ferrari, mated to a 5-speed gearbox), it's practical for daily use (based on a shortened 124 saloon platform, so it's comfy beyond the competition's wildest dreams), and it's a brilliant drive (contemporary road testers rated it very highly, on a level with the Lotus Elan).
