1914 Stutz Bearcat ...George Barris Replica
| November 16, 2006
Jay is quoted in a book about George Barris that he used to watch some TV series just to see the Barris-built cars. For thouse of you too yound to remember, Barris built some of the most famous customs and rods of the 50s and 60s. He was later discovered by Hollywood as a source of unique vehicles for the TV and film industry, The original TV Batmobile and the Munsters Coach were just two of his famous creations.
For a 1971 series "Bearcats!" he was commissioned to build two replicas for a 1914 Stutz Bearcat, the most famous of the early American sports cars.
I watched the series and fell in love with the looks of the brass-trimmed roadster.
Since real Bearcats now go for a fortune (the last one sold went for more than $700,000) I started looking for one of the Barris cars. After nearly 30 years I found one and restored it.
It's a full size car with Ford running gear atop a custom frame. The body is finely crafted steel and features a genuine Stutz brass radiator.
I had new wood wheels custom made. It's great to own a Barris built TV car, and a fun way to experince the early days of American sports cars.
